Groceries: Basics to Buying the Right Amount

Strolling down the aisle and picking out groceries among the sheer enormity of choices can be overwhelming. This is somewhat lessened when shopping for affordable groceries online, but the number of retail choices available for a single product can still cause a dilemma. What is the right size to include for grocery delivery?

· Initial Purchases: If you’re purchasing certain items for the first time, consider buying these groceries in the largest available size and in the most durable container. This way you can keep using the same bottle or jar for the incoming refills of your next grocery delivery.

· Dispenser Bottles:If your favorite liquid groceries come in pump dispenser bottles, buy those for your initial purchase. Otherwise, think about investing in these dispensers to control the amount allotted per use.

· Refills: Affordable groceries are best bought in bulk refills. The price per gram gradually lowers as the packaging increases in size.

· Packaging Materials: The previous rule does not apply to groceries where the packaging material used costs more. Powdered milk, for instance, is more expensive when bought in metal cans rather than by the carton.

· Individualized Packets: Do not mistake individualized packets for refills. The former costs significantly more than the latter due to the multiple packaging involved. Instant coffee is a good example of such an occurrence.

· Meat Cuts: Another great way to save is by buying meat in larger cuts. Smaller choice cuts cost extra for the labor and packaging involved. Know your cuts of meat to better arrange your grocery delivery plans and menu.

· Sliced Vegetables:As with meat, store-cut fruits and vegetables should be avoided whenever possible. Unless, of course, you find it more convenient and cost-efficient to pay someone else to cut your vegetables for you.

· Recycled and Recyclable Materials:If you don’t really have a brand preference, opt for groceries packed in recycled or recyclable materials. So we can all do our part in saving the planet, and possibly earn money, too.

· Price Ratio: For better judgment calls, keep a calculator handy when searching for affordable groceries. To compute, divide the price of the item by its content. For example, a $10 bottle with 100 ml of shampoo costs 10 cents per ml.

When it comes to finding affordable groceries, bulk buying is always ideal. The one problem you will never have when opting for grocery delivery is the transportation needed for such large purchases. The only decision remaining is picking the most ideal packaging for your needs.

Peapod Review Praises The Online Grocery Shopping Experience

Many frazzled grocery shoppers dream of having groceries delivered directly to their kitchen. To makes this dream come true, Stop & Shop has introduced Peapod, their online grocery delivery service. In this Peapod review, customers will find out about the many advantages, along with the small disadvantages, of choosing online grocery delivery. Customers who try out grocery delivery, however, may never go into the grocery store again.

Life is easier with online grocery service. Customers can travel up and down Stop & Shop’s aisles without getting up off of their sofas. On the website, customers may search by product, or may browse a specific category. Also, customers can peruse the weekly specials, point and click a featured item, and watch it appear in their virtual grocery cart. On their next visit, customers will be able to look at their last grocery list and put staples directly into their new shopping cart.

Shopping for groceries is convenient with Peapod. Taking a car full of children to the grocery store is rarely fun for any parent. Others, like senior citizens, may not be able to drive themselves to their local grocery store. By having groceries delivered, customers will be able to devote their time to their most important priorities instead of pushing a cart around the grocery store.

The selection that Stop & Shop offers online is good. Customers will find produce priced by the individual piece or by the pound. Customers will also find deli and meat products priced by the pound and will not have to worry about purchasing in bulk. In the online grocery store, customers will even find a fair selection of products like detergents, household cleaners, and toothpastes.

Peapod drivers bring groceries directly to the kitchen. Customers will save on their grocery purchase because drivers both accept and calculate valuable coupons. Customers may choose to tip their drivers, and tips are calculated in a number of ways. Some customers tip a specific amount per bag, while others choose a standard amount for every order.

Customers have many choices of delivery windows. Stop & Shop will discount the customer’s order if they choose a wider span of time, such as an entire morning or evening, as their delivery window. Also, if shoppers have to be away during their delivery time, they may choose an unattended delivery option and leave coolers outside for storage of their groceries.

Shopping for online groceries does have a few disadvantages. If customers want next-day delivery from Stop & Shop, then they must place their orders by 4 PM the previous day. To get meal supplies on the same day, shoppers will still have to order takeout or venture out to the store. Also, shoppers should be prepared to pay more for orders less than $100 along with a fuel surcharge for any order.

Most shoppers will decide that the many advantages of grocery delivery will outweigh the extra charges and minor inconveniences. Senior citizens, singles on the go or busy families will all find online grocery shopping to be convenient and fun. Customers should check the Peapod website or visit Stop & Shop for more information than is found in this Peapod review.

Printable Grocery List Tips and Tricks for The Serious Shopper

Using a printable grocery list is a smart way to save time and money. Here are my top tricks for getting the most out of any grocery list.

— Customize it.

Most printable grocery lists are quite generic so as to be usable by a wide variety of shoppers. That’s fine, however, for maximum efficiency you’ll want to customize your grocery list to include the items you regularly shop for. Do this the first time you use a new list.

— Keep it easy.

Next, there are a couple of options you’ll want to consider.

  1. One option is to print off multiple blank copies of your printable grocery list after you finish customizing it. Keep your copies in a folder in your kitchen so you can conveniently grab a new copy whenever you need one.
  2. Conversely, you can print off just one copy of your customized grocery list and drop that copy into a clear plastic sleeve. By doing so you instantly make your grocery list laminated. Just use a dry-erase marker and you can use your printable grocery list again and again.

— Go hi-tech.

Have a personal data assistant (pda)? Then you might like a downloadable grocery list better than a printed copy. A quick online search for “pda grocery list” yields positive results.

— Train the crew.

The biggest challenge with any grocery list is getting everyone in a household to use it. After all, what good is a grocery list that’s not ready to go shopping when you are? If you have multiple people in a household, there’s no way that just one person can know everything that needs to go on a grocery list.

So have a family meeting. Point out where you are posting your printable grocery list and let people know that if they want things from the grocery store they need to mark them on the list.

Remember, you’re still in charge of the list! Just because an item is on your list doesn’t mean you MUST buy it. You have a budget (hopefully!) and it’s up to the grocery shopper to make any final shopping decisions.

Nevertheless, it’s much simpler to cross something off a grocery list than it is to read the minds of all the family members. In our household, the grocery list ‘rules’ are quite simple. If you open the last of something, write it on the list or it won’t be there the next time you hungrily go looking for it. Our system has served us well for years.

— Make your grocery list accessible.

All the training in the world won’t work if the grocery list is not accessible to everyone who has a need to write on it. For example, do you have small children? I have a 7 year old who loves to have her say by adding items to the grocery list, so the list is kept where she can reach it. An added bonus is that a grocery list is a great place for budding spellers to practice their skills. (For a free printable grocery list, see the author’s resource box following this article.)

— The most important step.

Sometimes I hear shoppers moan that they did fine compiling a list at home but they can’t seem to remember to take the grocery list to the store with them. I suspect we’ve all had that happen to us at some time.

This is a point worth pondering. Without the list, your shopping can easily blow your budget as well as take much longer than it should. So take a minute and think about how you can always insure that your printable grocery list goes with you to the grocery store. Write yourself a reminder note on your calendar or schedule, get a key ring that reminds you of your list, whatever it takes to jog your memory. For myself, I have one place I promise myself to check before I walk out the door. Shopping lists and anything else that needs to go with me go in that one place.

A printable grocery list WILL save you time and money, but only if you keep the list handy to use and encourage its usage by all family members. In fact, a grocery list is one of the smartest tools you can use in your arsenal to run a well-managed home.

Introduce Yourself (Example Post)

This is an example post, originally published as part of Blogging University. Enroll in one of our ten programs, and start your blog right.

You’re going to publish a post today. Don’t worry about how your blog looks. Don’t worry if you haven’t given it a name yet, or you’re feeling overwhelmed. Just click the “New Post” button, and tell us why you’re here.

Why do this?

  • Because it gives new readers context. What are you about? Why should they read your blog?
  • Because it will help you focus you own ideas about your blog and what you’d like to do with it.

The post can be short or long, a personal intro to your life or a bloggy mission statement, a manifesto for the future or a simple outline of your the types of things you hope to publish.

To help you get started, here are a few questions:

  • Why are you blogging publicly, rather than keeping a personal journal?
  • What topics do you think you’ll write about?
  • Who would you love to connect with via your blog?
  • If you blog successfully throughout the next year, what would you hope to have accomplished?

You’re not locked into any of this; one of the wonderful things about blogs is how they constantly evolve as we learn, grow, and interact with one another — but it’s good to know where and why you started, and articulating your goals may just give you a few other post ideas.

Can’t think how to get started? Just write the first thing that pops into your head. Anne Lamott, author of a book on writing we love, says that you need to give yourself permission to write a “crappy first draft”. Anne makes a great point — just start writing, and worry about editing it later.

When you’re ready to publish, give your post three to five tags that describe your blog’s focus — writing, photography, fiction, parenting, food, cars, movies, sports, whatever. These tags will help others who care about your topics find you in the Reader. Make sure one of the tags is “zerotohero,” so other new bloggers can find you, too.
